Akwa Ibom Governor Pledges support for NYSC Members


AKWA Ibom State governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, has pledged to provide adequate facilities to the state NYSC orientation camp to make the exercise comfortable for the corps members posted to the state.

Governor Emmanuel, who made the pledge during the orientation ceremony of the 2015 Batch ‘ A’ stream 2 corps members deployed to the state, held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ikot Itie Udung in Nsit Atai Local Government Area, hinted that 11,000 out of 230, 000 corps members in the country, representing five per cent, angle to serve in the state.


Welcoming the corps members to the state, he hinted that in addition to the present batch, the state was already hosting 11,000 corps members, noting that it was an indication that success had many friends and that today, they were friends of the success of the immediate past governor of the state.

According to him, “this government is a continuum from the previous government of Chief Godswill Akpabio. So, we assure you that in the next few weeks, all the promises that were made by the previous administration would be fulfilled. Already, we would provide a well packaged ambulance for the camp and make a cash donation for the equipment of the orientation camp”.

Emmanuel assured the corps members that he would provide enough facilities at the camp to cater for many posted to the state. “I want to assure you that this government is aware of the challenges of the camp and we would make sure that we provide such needed facilities in the camp because the welfare of corps members in our state is our utmost concern.

The governor, who reiterated the state government’ readiness to make their stay comfortable and a memorial one, observed that some corps members, when posted to some establishments in the state, did have accommodation problems, assuring that he would discuss with the state Ministry of Lands and Surveys to proffer solutions to it.

Governor Emmanuel, while reading the address of President Muhammadu Buhari, thanked corps members in the country for their willingness to serve the country through the scheme, describing as significant their coming on board to serve the country at this period because they were the first set of corps members to be sworn-in in the life of his administration.

Buhari charged them to embrace attitudinal change and support his administration for the country to move forward, as he enumerated the goals of his administration to include tackling unemployment, insecurity and other vices, stressing that his administration would continue to support NYSC scheme and calling on them to join hands in fighting corruption.

The President also lauded the NYSC management for giving hope and succour to the youths in terms of self-employment, Non-Governmental Organization programmes (NGO), among others, and urged the corps members to be good ambassadors of change and cooperate with host communities where they were posted to in order to serve the country diligently.

The state co-ordinator of NYSC, Lady Ngozi Chukwuka, congratulated the governor on his recent assumption of office, and disclosed that 2,300 batch ‘A’ corps members were posted to the state, describing the immediate past governor of the state, Chief Akpabio as an ebullient, caring and visionary leader who had elevated the state to an enviable height, thus causing corps members now to long to serve in Akwa Ibom.

Chukwuka hoped that Governor Emmanuel would not only toe the path of his predecessor, but would surpass him, reminding the governor that his predecessor made some promises shortly before the end of his tenure, and expressing the belief that the Governor would fulfill such promises.

The acting Chairman NYSC Governing Board, Mr Nse Joseph Edem, congratulated the corps members and assured them that employers and communities were waiting eagerly for their arrival after the three-week orientation course.

Edem, who is also Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sports, urged them to avail themselves of the traditional hospitality for which the state is known, charging them to participate in all activities packaged for their orientation on camp, stressing that it would position them well to serve meritoriously.

He then used the forum to call on the Corps members to exhibit positive attitude and make discipline their watchword by shunning cultism, unnecessary movements outside the camp, smoking, alcoholism and immorality
